What You Need To Know About Luna Natural Sleep Aid

Luna Natural Sleep Aid is a supplement designed to “help you fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, not groggy.” The product comes in several different versions, including a melatonin-free version and a mild version called Luna Kids, but the supplement reviewed below is Luna Original.

Luna Natural Sleep Aid is manufactured by Nested Naturals, a company based in Canada but who ships their products internationally. The supplement itself is manufactured in the USA.

What Are The Side Effects Of Luna Natural Sleep Aid?

There are some ingredients found in Luna Natural Sleep Aid that can cause a range of side effects. Customer reviews suggest that headaches are the most commonly experienced side effect, likely due to the significant dose of melatonin used in the supplement; we recommend trying one capsule at first for optimal melatonin dosing (and to minimise chances of side effects occurring), and only increase dose to two capsules if necessary. Other reported side effects include “weird”, vivid dreams (some pleasant, others not so much), feeling groggy or sluggish in the morning, and stomach discomfort.

Potential side effects of Valerian root include headache, excitability, uneasiness, and even insomnia in some people. A few people feel sluggish in the morning after taking valerian, especially at higher doses.

Melatonin can cause some side effects including headache, short-term feelings of depression, daytime sleepiness, dizziness, stomach cramps, and irritability. Do not drive or use machinery for four to five hours after taking melatonin, passion flower, or valerian root.

For a more detailed look at the potential side effects that could develop whilst taking this supplement, check out the Side Effects tab below.

How Much Does Luna Natural Sleep Aid Cost?

Luna Natural Sleep Aid can be purchased from the manufacturer’s website, nestednaturals.com. Here, a single bottle costs $21.95 plus delivery charges.

The supplement is also available on Amazon.com, where a single bottle also costs $21.95. Delivery charges may also apply. On Amazon they offer a 10% discount for purchases of two or more bottles, and a 15% discount for purchases of four or more bottles.

Each bottle contains 60 capsules, which provides 30 servings if taken as directed. However, many customers report that they only need to take one capsule a night, which would mean that a bottle would provide 60 servings. If you find you only need one capsule each night, this supplement offers excellent value for money. At the recommended serving, the product appears to be averagely priced compared with comparable supplements.

Our Verdict On Luna Natural Sleep Aid

Luna Natural Sleep Aid contains numerous ingredients that have traditionally been used as sleep aids in herbal medicine, including valerian, chamomile, and passionflower. It also contains a significant dose of melatonin (6 mg per two capsule serving); when taking two capsules this dose is slightly too high, and may be the reason that many reviewers noted that they experienced headaches and other side effects whilst taking this supplement. When taking just one capsule, however, the melatonin dose is within the recommended daily dosage. Another common complaint about the supplement is people experiencing vivid, “weird” dreams and nightmares whilst taking the supplement.

Whilst the supplement is advertised as an alternative to prescription sleep medications (which is certainly true), we believe that this has led many to directly compare Luna Natural Sleep Aid’s strength with these much stronger and potentially addictive drugs, leading to many people being disappointed that the product doesn’t “knock you out”. Herbal sleep aids and remedies are supposed to help you to get to sleep, and are not high-strength sedatives. This supplement and others like it still need to be combined with proper pre-sleep habits in order to be effective. These include “screen-free time” before bed, avoiding caffeine in the hours before sleep, and sleeping in a dark environment, which allows your body to produce melatonin naturally. Herbal sleep aids such as Luna Natural Sleep Aid are non-addictive, and stopping their use does not cause withdrawal symptoms.

The supplement is covered by a “100% satisfaction guarantee”, but the manufacturers do not state how long this is valid for after the date of purchase (it is possible that there is no limit, or that they just fail to state this).

The product appears to be reasonably priced, especially if you find that just one capsule is enough for you, as this will mean that a single bottle will last for as long as 60 days of use.

Overall we do not recommend Luna Natural Sleep Aid to our readers, due to the high melatonin content that appears to cause side effects.

Luna Natural Sleep Aid Concerns:

  • Numerous reports of side effects
  • Melatonin content per two-capsule serving is too high

What Does Luna Natural Sleep Aid Claim To Do?

The manufacturers provide the following description of the product’s benefits:

“Get to Sleep Fast
LUNA lulls your body and mind into a quiet, relaxed state. It eases racing thoughts and tension from the day, so that you’ll be able to drift into sleep easily.

Wake up Refreshed
Start your day feeling rejuvenated and energetic. LUNA’s gentle blend of natural herbs helps promote restful, uninterrupted sleep without the groggy, sluggish wake up that you get from prescription medications.

Stay Asleep All Night
LUNA is formulated to help you stay asleep throughout the night, even if you are someone who suffers from “middle-of-the-night insomnia” (MOTN) and often finds yourself waking in the wee hours.

Set a Healthier Sleep Pattern
The Melatonin in LUNA helps your body reset its inner sleep clock naturally so that bedtime becomes sleep time on the regular. In addition to helping with insomnia, LUNA can also ease jet lag.”

Does Luna Natural Sleep Aid Work?

There are numerous ingredients found in this supplement that have been used for hundreds of years as herbal sleep remedies, including chamomile, lemon balm, and valerian root. Passion flower and valerian root are both mild natural sedatives taken from plants, so you should not drive after taking this supplement.

Some of the ingredients can also reduce mild anxiety, such as hops and passion flower.

Melatonin is the body’s sleep hormone, and whilst it is produced naturally in the body (in the dark, as light causes production to stop), supplementing it is an effective aid to help consumers get to sleep. Whilst some of the other ingredients may improve quality of sleep, melatonin will not affect this. The dose of melatonin found in a two capsule serving is higher than recommended, and this could increase the chances of side effects occurring, including headaches.

What Are The Ingredients of Luna Natural Sleep Aid?

The ingredients found in Luna Natural Sleep Aid are detailed below. The ingredient quantities listed are per serving of two capsules.

  • Magnesium (as bisglycinate chelate) (TRAACS®‡) 10 mg (3% RDA)
  • L-Theanine 200 mg: This amino acid is found in green tea, and may increase feelings of relaxation. It may also reduce the negative side effects of caffeine, although there is seemingly no clinical evidence to support this claim. Source
  • Valerian (Root) 150 mg: Can be used to treat insomnia. A mild sedative. Source
  • Chamomile (Root Extract) 150 mg: May aid relaxation and sleep. Source
  • Passion Flower (Whole Plant Extract) 100 mg: Passion flower is a herbal remedy used as a mild sedative and sleep aid. It is also used to help reduce mild anxiety. Source
  • Lemon Balm (Whole Plant Extract) 100 mg: Lemon Balm is thought to have soothing properties, aiding sleep, and helping to relieve anxiety. It is also used for digestive disorders, including settling an upset stomach, and treating bloating and gas. Source
  • Hops (Flower Extract) 100 mg: Hops flowers are used to treat anxiety and insomnia. It could also increase the consumer’s appetite. Source
  • GABA 100 mg: A chemical that is produced in the brain naturally and acts as a neurotransmitter, it is also available in supplement form. It is thought to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and could also reduce symptoms of PMS. It is sometimes used as a non-prescription treatment of ADHD, as it is thought to induce calm and aid mental focus. However, research shows that GABA supplements cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, and so it is possible that any mental benefits are the result of a placebo effect. Source
  • Melatonin 6 mg: A hormone that helps to regulate the body’s sleep cycle. It is used as a supplement to treat insomnia, and is also used to treat depression. The recommended nightly dose of Melatonin is between 0.5mg and 5 mg, starting at a lower dose and increasing it as needed. The elderly and those with insomnia appear to benefit the most from melatonin supplementation. Source

Amazon also has previously removed over 500 suspicious or fake reviews of Luna Natural Sleep aid. Whilst there are thousands of positive reviews, there are also hundreds of negative reviews, divided between people who felt no benefits and those who experienced side effects. Developing a headache appears to be the most common side effect.

This works fairly well. Need to take about an hour before you plan to go to sleep. I have used it several times and I find myself drift off with them and wake up not feeling all groggy like other sleep aids make you feel. So I like that this is a natural herbal product. I won’t say it works every single time for me perhaps 75% of the time I take them it aids me to fall asleep. I have a hard time getting to sleep about every night, so when they work, it’s great.

Caused bad headache after taking. Not good.
Update: The company contacted me and offered me a refund. I wish there are more companies like this.

I have tried a few other natural sleep aids on the market without much success, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of Luna. I have been taking it almost a month now, and with the exception of a few nights, I have slept pretty well. About 30 minutes after taking my two pills, I can feel myself becoming relaxed and sleepy. For the most part, I am able to sleep through the night without waking up. Prior to taking Luna, that wasn’t the case. I would have a hard time falling asleep, and an especially hard time staying asleep. I am only giving 4 stars because even though I seem to be getting a good night’s sleep, most days I still feel tired during the day. I was hoping that the improved sleep would provide more of an energy boost during the day.

I works well as advertised. It is not a sleeping pill in the sense that it will knock you out instantaneously or anything. However, it undoubtedly does keep you asleep and have you waking up in the morning feeling more rejuvenated. It is also much easier to wake up from a full night’s sleep after taking these. I’ve always had difficulty falling asleep and getting good quality sleep, and these help tremendously. The bottle recommends two capsules, but I only really need to take one a night. The only other thing I would like to point out is that I’ve been getting some very weird and vivid dreams. It may or may not have to do with this product and it’s not a negative experience, but it is a personal experience that I’ve been having. Also a very strong positive that your body does not get dependent on it or anything. Great product!

I had such high hopes based on other reviews. It still took me forever to fall asleep and as other reviewers commented, vivid dreams were a constant, not a good side effect.

For a while now, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I think it’s a combination of health issues and working both day and night shifts. I decided to try this before I went with a prescription medication.
They do seem to help. I fall asleep faster and stay asleep but I do have lots of wild dreams. An increase in my REM sleep, I guess. I do feel kind of groggy the next day but I’m not sure if that’s just because I’ve been sleeping poorly for so long and I’m just chronically tired.

I do not hate this product as the rating would indicate. I’m rating it a 1 because the product has not worked at all for me. I was no more relaxed, did not sleep any longer or experience anything sleep worthy with this product other than the insomnia I had prior to taking the recommended dosage.

Caused terrible stomach pain

I took one capsule with a full glass of water and within 1 hour I had a blistering headache. I had an appointment with my doctor who does alternative therapy and he said there was too much melatonin in this product. 1mg or even .5mg would be fine. I do not know if this is just too much for me or for anyone in general. Seems to work for others. So back it goes.
