Dr Amen’s claim to fame is his chain of clinics which make use of a certain kind of imaging to diagnose and treat brain abnormalities. Although NeuroVite Plus isn’t a standard treatment for those abnormalities, it still contains over fifty nutrients and plant extracts, together with three “hand-selected proprietary high-nutrient blends” for both body and mind.
That’s a lot of goodness to cram into such a small capsule, so we thought we’d take a closer look to see how they did it, and this is what we found.
Sold as a brain booster, NeuroVite Plus is made up of over fifty vitamins, minerals, and plant extracts, which help support body functions as well.
Its three proprietary blends are: The Brain Boosting Blend, comprised of clinically researched brain health nutrients. The Fruit and Vegetable Blend, comprising the antioxidant equivalent of five servings of fruit and vegetables. The Digestive Enzyme Blend, to support your natural intestinal balance which is critical for a healthy brain.
Side effects can include, digestion problems, weakness, fatigue, urine discoloration, risk of developing diabetes, hair loss, problems with nails, and liver and kidney problems.
From the BrainMD website, you can either pay $49.95 if you’re making a one-off order, or if you prefer their monthly autodelivery service, that’d be 15% off and free shipping, totalling a regular credit card deduction of $42.46. Either way, you’d be getting 120 capsules, which could be anywhere between two weeks’ worth or a month’s supply.
Even though it’s marketed as a brain formula, NeuroVite Plus has so many ingredients to deal with so many conditions, and support so many body functions, we can’t help feeling that the company’s just shovelling all their leftover ingredients into capsules and hoping for the best.
That’s probably an unfair appraisal, but in these days of specialized supplements for specific conditions, and the sheer number of ingredients here really does stick out like a sore thumb.
And then there’s the phenomenal amount of B vitamins in NeuroVite Plus – anywhere between 30 and 80 times the recommended daily values in some cases.
Can there be too much of a good thing? We think that in this case, yes, there can. If NeuroVite Plus were to be marketed as a general tonic then we’d be less inclined to dismiss it. But since it’s sold as a brain tonic with so many possibly unnecessary extras added on, we think enough is enough and just to be on the safe side, we’re going to reject it.
Overall, we do not recommend NeuroVite Plus to our readers.

When we’re reviewing a product, it’s difficult not to include a thought or two about the people behind that product, and NeuroVite Plus is no exception. Although many people these days would agree with Dr Amen’s view that presidential candidates should have brain scans, it’s doubtful they’d share his professional opinion that 97% of brains aren’t functioning normally. At least, that’s how he interprets the brain scans performed throughout his chain of clinics (at the bargain price a while back of $3,250 per initial evaluation and $795 per follow-up scan).
As for NeuroVite Plus itself, with its enormous amount of B vitamins every single day for however long people are going to take it, plus the unknown amounts of the ingredients in its three proprietary blends (one for brain, one for digestion, and one just made up of organic fruits and vegetables, for whatever reason) it might just be that users could find themselves biting off more than they can chew. Figuratively speaking, at least.
Adults take 4 capsules daily after meals (up to 8 capsules under the supervision of a nutritionally informed physician). Children ages 9-18 take 1 capsule per 40 pounds of body weight, not to exceed 4 capsules daily. Not intended for children under 9 years.
Now, if NeuroVite Plus were to be recommended as a short-term treatment to normalize one of those 97% of scanned brains that needed normalizing, to us that would make more sense than an ongoing overload of B vitamins. But it’s sold as a daily tonic, and it’s also possible to double the dosage (on advice from a health professional) which means that’d be 160 times the recommended B-vitamin Daily Value.
Fortunately, the body can get rid of excess vitamin B though urination, but that makes for some very expensive bathroom breaks.
NeuroVite Plus, we’re told, “provides added nourishment to all parts of your body, from the smallest cells, to tissues and organs”, and that would include the eyes and heart, as well as the digestion and circulation systems. It also “provides additional protection against free-radical damage to your skin with the special blend of essential antioxidants”.
It depends on what you’re taking it for. There are so many ingredients with so many different functions – anything from antioxidants to promoting eye health and so much in between. And let’s not forget the original brain health aspect of NeuroVite Plus as well. So it sometimes feels like the good Doctor Amen’s taking a shotgun approach and cramming as many ingredients as humanly possible into this product, in the hopes that at least one of them will have some kind of effect.
His three proprietary blends (Fruit & Vegetable, Brain Boosting, and Digestive Enzyme) look like they contain some useful ingredients, but we’re not told how much of each ingredient we’re getting in any of the four, or even eight, capsules adults should be taking after meals. So whether that’s enough of each ingredient to make any kind of difference we can’t tell you.
So as far as the question “does NeuroVite Plus work?” goes, the best answer we can give you is “Maybe. Maybe not.” Then again, if you feel like you’re not getting enough B vitamins every day, with NeuroVite Plus you’re getting around 30 times the recommended Daily Value of Vitamin B1 and B2, and over 80 times the DV of Vitamin B12. Then again, you’re also taking three times the DV of Vitamin C at the same time, which, says the Mayo Clinic, can reduce the absorption of Vitamin B12.

We could be here all day going through the side effects of every single ingredient, so to save time we’ll just pick out the most disturbing ones we’ve found.
Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid) – the more you take, the more chance you get of digestion problems and headache.
Vitamin D (as D3, cholecalciferol) – side effects can include fatigue, weakness, digestion problems, and a metallic taste in the mouth.
Thiamin (Vitamin B1) (as thiamin HCI) – WebMD says it’s “likely safe” when taken in appropriate amounts, but whether 3333% is an appropriate amount is a different matter.
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) – high doses can bring on digestion problems, and there’s always the possibility of discolored urine.
Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCI and pyridoxal-5-phosphate) – long-term high dosages are described as “possibly unsafe”, and can cause digestion problems, headache, fatigue, and possible nerve and brain problems.
Pantothenic acid (as d-calcium pantothenate) – large amounts can bring on problems like diarrhea.
Selenium (as SelenoExcell® yeast) – low doses over the long term can bring on the risk of diabetes, while high doses can bring on digestion problems, irritability, low energy levels, and changes in nails. Long-term use can bring on side effects including hair loss, muscle tenderness, problems with the liver and kidneys, bad breath, and tremors.
Manganese (as glycinate) – can complicate existing liver issues.
The reviewers on the NeuroVite Plus website love it – of course. So we went to Amazon for a more balanced picture and found that some reviewers had digestion problems, thought they had to take too many pills each day, and interfered with their existing medications.
