Below we take an in-depth look into Parotid PMG, to see whether this ‘gland-based’ treatment is as silly as it sounds.
Parotid PMG is a unique supplement that claims to improve the functioning of the parotid gland. The product works by providing the customer with a powdered parotid gland taken from a cow, which is then said to improve the human gland and the overall digestive system. Evidence from the Internet suggests that customers have been recommended this product for reasons varying from increasing saliva production, ‘detoxifying’ the body, and easing back pain.
This relatively old product is produced and sold by Standard Process, an American supplement manufacturer that has been in the market since 1929. Standard Process and its founder/CEO, Dr Royal Lee, have been embroiled in various controversies since the company’s founding, with most of the criticism directed at Lee and his habit for making untrue or baseless statements about his products. The FDA has investigated and spoken out against the company repeatedly, with Lee actually facing criminal charges, a 1-year suspended prison term and a large fine for lying about his products back in 1962.
These days, Standard Process products are largely promoted and sold by distributors. Standard Process distributors are almost-always alternative healthcare practitioners (such as naturopaths and chiropractors), with many apparently making frequent bizarre and wildly untrue claims about Standard Process products. In light of their previous legal troubles, it appears that Standard Process has simply chosen to outsource the task of lying about their products to other people!
Very little is known about bovine parotid gland extract, and there is currently no information available as to whether it causes side effects. Customers should exercise caution when using this product, as side effects could potentially be severe and hard to predict. Magnesium may cause mild side effects in rare cases, which could include stomach issues, diarrhoea or vomiting. Calcium may also give some customers gas.
Purchasing Parotid PMG from the Internet appears to be far more expensive than buying directly from Standard Process distributors. On Amazon, a single 90-capsule pack of Parotid PMG (one-month supply) costs $64.99. Prices may be as low as $23 per bottle from Standard Process distributors.
The idea behind Parotid PMG is that humans can improve/fix problems with their parotid gland by consuming the powdered form of a cow’s parotid gland. Put simply, there is absolutely no evidence that this idea is accurate in the slightest, as no human trials have ever been carried out to test it. It could work, but it is just as likely (if not more) that powdered bovine gland does nothing at all.
Customer reviews seem completely split on whether the product affects the production of saliva, and most other customers have seemingly chosen the product for entirely random reasons (such as to cure back problems or as a means of ‘detox’).
The reason for the confusion is entirely down to the unscrupulous nature of Standard Process and its distributors. Standard Process has been repeatedly accused of (and charged with) lying to customers and falsely advertising its products. Since the 1980s, the company tries to avoid advertising its products at all, instead relying on an army of independent distributors who make false claims on the company’s behalf. The confusing and contradictory information that is now circulating about this product has made it so that very few customers appear to know what they’re buying, and there have been numerous sad cases of people apparently trying to use this product to cure the wrong ailment.
Standard Process also offers no money back guarantee on its products, often gives insufficient information on its products, and generally seem far more concerned with making a quick buck than helping out its customers. We advise staying well away!
We would not recommend Parotid PMG to our readers.

Parotid PMG is a health supplement that claims to make the parotid (or saliva) glands work properly. The most important ingredient in this product is an extract of a cow’s parotid gland, with the central idea being that the human body can utilise a saliva gland taken from another animal. This product is currently used to heal or solve issues related to the parotid gland, or as a way to ‘detoxify’ the body of poisonous heavy metals.
This product is manufactured and sold by Standard Process, one of the older American supplement companies. Founded in 1927, this company was founded and run by a dentist called Dr Royal Lee. Over the years, Lee and his company have been dogged by controversy, as the dentist became known for making unsubstantiated or untrue comments about nutrition and health, all with the aim of selling products. Lee was eventually labelled ‘probably the largest publisher of unreliable and false nutritional information in the world’ by an FDA enforcer in 1963, and his company now seems to shy away from making any claims at all about their products. The company can be contacted via the contact details supplied on the official Stand Process website.
One capsule per meal, or as directed.
As with many other Standard Process products, there is very little description of what the product does on the manufacturer’s website (the official website simply states that the product ‘supports healthy parotid gland function’).
Other official advertising materials go into a little more detail. Along with improving the functioning of the parotid gland itself, Parotid PMG is also said to provide key antibodies and enzymes that can improve the overall digestive system. The advertisers also claim that that Parotid PMG can improve the body’s overall cellular health, nervous-system health, and overall metabolism.
Although not mentioned in official materials for legal reasons, many customers claim to have been recommended Parotid PMG by Standard Process distributors for the purpose of detoxifying the body of poisonous heavy metals.
There is no hard evidence confirming whether ingesting animal glands will improve the performance of our body’s glands. Despite the theory’s elegant simplicity, no human trials have ever been carried out, and it is fair to assume that the practice does not result in all the benefits listed by the manufacturer (such as improving the digestive system). Some former customers report that product helped improve the performance of their parotid gland, whilst others claim that the product is useless in this regard. We ultimately recommend speaking with your doctor if you have an issue with your parotid gland.
One thing that this product absolutely does not help with is eradicating ‘toxic heavy metals’ in the bloodstream (such as lead or mercury). Despite not being officially advertised as a benefit, many Standard Process distributors claim that Parotid PMG does this. There is no evidence-based reason to think that Parotid PMG performs this function at all, and we strongly discourage anyone from purchasing this product for that reason.
The use of calcium and magnesium could help to provide minor benefits to the functioning of the nervous system and could mildly improve the metabolism. Readers should note that these benefits will only take place if the customer has a deficiency in either of these minerals.
The ingredients included in Parotid PMG are listed below. Readers should note that most ingredient quantities are not listed, which can make it difficult or impossible to estimate how effective the mix is overall. The ingredient quantities that are listed are true for 1 tablet of Parotid PMG.
Proprietary Blend 358 mg
Researchers still know very little about the potential effects or dangers of ingesting raw bovine parotid gland. It is probable that this practice does result in side effects, although none are known at this time.
Magnesium can cause mild side effects for some people, which may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and other effects. Calcium can also sometimes cause impromptu gas or belching.
Caution:
Not suitable for individuals under 18 years of age. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding consult a doctor before using this product. If you are taking any medication, or have any type of medical issue, consult with a doctor before using this product.
Perhaps the most interesting thing to note about the reviews we found for Parotid PMG is that each customer appears to have been recommended the product for a different reason (!) Standard Process distributors seemingly recommend Parotid PMG for any reason imaginable (back pain, ‘detoxifying’, increasing saliva production, etc.) and customers have wildly different experiences. Customers are split on whether Parotid PMG impacted their saliva production or digestive systems.
Great product that helps keep you in balance. The pills are easy to swallow and don’t have a harsh aftertaste. This was very helpful to my overall supplement routine. It helps a lot with digestion and gas and bloating.
Use these myself. It is a great product and is used to help the body fight heavy metal toxicity.
My dentist marvels at the nice health of my saliva and teeth since I started using this a couple of years ago … no more dental problems! I only use natural products and mostly coconut oil along with this to improve my saliva since I have an autoimmune disorder that dries the mouth.
This was delivered very quickly and the pills are working very well. I had constant back pain and am feeling much better.
I can’t tell that it helps my salivary problem much.
I’m sure it’s a high-quality product, but I’m not feeling the effects so far (after a month’s use). I was told it would help with saliva production.
Standard Process does not offer a money back guarantee on their products. Returns can be arranged, but refunds will only be granted on ‘unopened packages’. To arrange a refund, customers must first contact customer service within 30 days to receive a Return to Manufacturer Authorisation (RMA) number, which they then must write on the outside of the returned package. Even if all of these conditions are met, Standard Process will deduct 20% from the refund to cover processing fees.
Parotid PMG is only available to buy on the Internet from Amazon, as all Standard Process products are generally intended to be purchased from alternative healthcare professionals who act as distributors. If you have a chiropractor or alternative therapist, etc., they may be able to arrange a shipment of Standard Process products on your behalf if you wish.
A single pack of Parotid PMG (a month’s supply, with 90 capsules) costs $64.99 from Amazon. Prices are reportedly much lower when buying direct from alternative medical practitioners, as the guide price listed on the Standard Process website is just $23 per bottle.
