This is not an uncommon experience. The nootropic supplement market, valued at over $5 billion in the United States alone, experiences a product turnover rate that would alarm most industries. Brands launch with fanfare, cultivate loyal user bases, and then disappear with the quiet efficiency of a witness entering protective custody. What actually drives these disappearances is rarely what it appears to be on the surface.
The FDA's Long Arm and the Supplements That Felt It
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) handed the supplement industry an unusual degree of operational freedom. Unlike pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements do not require pre-market approval from the FDA. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their own products are safe before bringing them to market—a framework critics have long described as regulatory self-governance.
But that freedom has limits, and the FDA has become increasingly willing to enforce them.

The FDA sent warning letters to multiple supplement companies in 2015 asserting that picamilon did not qualify as a dietary ingredient under DSHEA. Products containing it were expected to be removed from the market. Some brands complied immediately. Others took longer. A few attempted reformulations. The result, from the consumer's perspective, was a wave of product discontinuations that arrived without coherent explanation.
When the Ingredient Itself Becomes the Liability
Not every disappearance traces back to an explicit FDA action. Some products vanish because a core ingredient quietly accumulates a body of adverse event reports, litigation risk, or unwanted media scrutiny—none of which necessarily triggers formal regulatory action but all of which alter the risk calculus for manufacturers.
OxyElite Pro, a product that occupied the aggressive end of the cognitive and weight-loss supplement spectrum, was pulled from shelves in 2013 following an outbreak of acute liver injury cases linked to its use. The manufacturer, USPlabs, initially reformulated the product before ultimately discontinuing it amid mounting legal pressure. Criminal charges were eventually filed against company executives, though the case produced mixed outcomes in court. The product's disappearance was swift. The explanations offered to consumers were minimal.
This pattern—rapid removal followed by institutional silence—is not accidental. Legal counsel routinely advises companies facing adverse event scrutiny to minimize public statements. The result is that consumers are left to piece together what happened through FDA databases, court filings, and investigative journalism rather than any communication from the brand itself.
The Economics of Extinction
Regulatory pressure explains a meaningful portion of nootropic disappearances, but it does not explain all of them. Market economics account for a substantial share of the remainder.
The nootropic category is characterized by extraordinarily low barriers to entry and correspondingly brutal competition. A brand can be launched with contract manufacturing, a Shopify storefront, and a social media budget. Many are. The same accessibility that enables rapid market entry also ensures that most entrants are undercapitalized and operationally fragile.
When a key ingredient faces a supply chain disruption—as occurred with several adaptogenic compounds during the COVID-19 pandemic—smaller brands frequently lack the purchasing power or cash reserves to absorb the impact. Products are quietly discontinued. Sometimes the brand survives by pivoting to different formulations. Sometimes it does not survive at all.
Customer acquisition costs in the supplement industry have risen sharply as digital advertising platforms have matured and become more competitive. A brand that built its customer base on affordable Facebook advertising in 2016 may find that the same strategy is economically nonviable in the current environment. When the unit economics of acquiring a new customer exceed the lifetime value that customer generates, the business case for continuing production collapses—regardless of whether the product itself is effective or well-regarded.
The Reformulation Sleight of Hand

The pattern of nootropic product failures, taken in aggregate, communicates something worth hearing: the supplement market's low regulatory threshold allows products to reach consumers before their safety and efficacy profiles are fully understood, and the same economic fragility that enables rapid market entry ensures that accountability is often absent when things go wrong.
For consumers, the practical implication is straightforward. Brand loyalty in the nootropic space carries a meaningful risk of disruption. Products built on legally ambiguous ingredients, undercapitalized business models, or single-source supply chains are inherently impermanent. Identifying supplements with well-established ingredients, transparent manufacturing practices, and financially stable parent companies does not eliminate the risk of product discontinuation—but it reduces it materially.
The FDA's public warning letter database, the National Institutes of Health's Dietary Supplement Label Database, and court record aggregators such as PACER offer more reliable intelligence about a product's long-term viability than any brand's marketing materials. Using them before committing to a supplement regimen is not paranoia. Given the history of this industry, it is simply due diligence.
